Grymsdyke Farm is a design research initiative in Buckinghamshire, UK.
The project was established by Guan Lee and Paul Starr in 2004 with the aim of supporting the development of research in the field of design, by furnishing tangible tools for creative thinking, to provide designers, architects, artists and other practitioners with the space and tools to evolve their ideas in an experimental manner.
Grymsdyke Farm is a destination and key reference point in the design sector: a platform for developing ideas, exploring design practices and investigating methodologies.
This mission plays out by means of four core components: workshops, an educational agenda, a programme of activities and The Farm Shop.
The workshops take place at Grymsdyke Farm’s facilities, which function as The Maker Space (research and fabrication laboratory) and living-working space, where free experimentation is not only permitted but actively encouraged.
Both the workshops and the educational agenda place a special emphasis on nurturing creatives and their development.
This focus is manifested through a series of projects, including experimentation in fabrication, lectures, talks and design exhibitions.
Grymsdyke Farm is also engaged in a busy schedule of activities and exhibitions, both within its own spaces and internationally, to showcase the results of its in-house production. These often feature established and emerging figures in the design industry.
The outcomes of these practices are available for purchase from The Farm Shop.
With an active location and a wide-ranging network of industry experts, Grymsdyke Farm operates as both a brand and a research initiative, dedicated to supporting creative minds in finding the optimal environment in which to flourish.
Grymsdyke Farm is located in Lacey Green, Buckinghamshire, UK, in a historically rich part of the countryside in the Home Counties, with deep-rooted connections to both the local area and the city, in close proximity to Greater London.
The Farm functions as a research facility, experimental laboratory and living-working space. It comprises three main units: The Farmhouse, The Maker Space and The Outdoor Spaces. The Farmhouse includes residential amenities such as a kitchen, living room, bedrooms and library. The Maker Space, the core of the facility, is equipped with various forms of fabrication for daily experimentation.
The Outdoor Spaces feature an orchard, tennis court, paddock, vegetable garden and spaces for events and site-specific installations.
Grymsdyke Farm offers a diverse range of materials and production techniques, blending traditional artisanship with modern digita design methods. The Maker Space is equipped for woodworking, metalworking, ceramics and digital fabrication.
Situated in a secluded, historically agricultural setting, it provides a unique environment for reflection, experimentation and production. The Maker Space also features guest accommodation and shared facilities, fostering a communal and immersive experience.
